The revolving record player that is my ipod has been churned and tossed this week; both physically out of a locker and musically through rotation of multiple fantastic discoveries. I shall not share the perilous tale of an ipod crashing six foot on to a stone floor but I will flaunt some delectable new “Dissonant Euphony” offerings.
Aoki Takamasa’s “Quantum” (Cirque, 2003) chastises with piercing frequencies yet rewards with sublime acute rhythms and occasional whispers of sweet nothings. Slow resonant noises create finely tuned aesthetics that relentlessly barrage the mind. Takamasa pledges restful contemplation through benevolent dissonance.
Stand-out tracks:
“A Girl at the Corner”
“Frozen Fountain”
“They’ve been waiting”
“You Look Nice”
I have just recently picked up Deathprod’s essential 4cd compilation of “Morals and Dogma”, “Treetop Drive”, “Imaginary Songs From Tristan Da Cunha” and “Reference Frequencies”. Helge Sten offers up the darkest and most absorbing soundscapes with an isolation and eeriness akin to the haunting worlds of artist Zdzislaw Bekinski. Powerful destitution manifests in layered electronic manipulations whilst cinematic strings disfigure a humbling vacancy.
Stand-out tracks:
“Treetop Drive 1”
“Towboat”
“Dead People’s Things”
Morten Qvenild, founding member of Shining, musical guru and pioneering jazz architect is renowned for his innovation and inventiveness. “In This Country – This was the pace of my heartbeat” chillingly invites you to a smoky basement club where a mesmerizing pianist proceeds to apathetically insinuate each passing thought.
Stand-out tracks:
“Beaver Creek”
“Only the birds can see us”
“Laschia Ch’Io Pianga”
I have also added a couple of simple melancholic vocals via Kimiko Itoh’s astounding “Follow Me” and “River of Crystals” which perfectly reside against the futuristic and awe inspiring compositions of Kenji Kawai on the Ghost in the Shell: Innocence soundtrack.
